Seasonal Chimney Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

Seasonal Chimney Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

If you heat your home with a wood-burning stove or fireplace, you already know how comforting that first fire of the season can be. But before you light it up, it’s worth asking: is your chimney ready for winter?

A clean, well-maintained chimney isn’t just about efficiency. It’s about safety. Creosote build-up, blocked flues, or damaged liners can all increase the risk of chimney fires and poor air quality inside your home.

The good news? With a little seasonal prep, keeping your system safe and clean is easier than ever. Let’s walk through a checklist of what to do this Fall to make your Winter warmer and safer:

✔️ Inspect your chimney cap and flue
Make sure the cap is secure and clear of leaves, twigs, or nests. A blocked flue means poor airflow, and possibly smoke or carbon monoxide coming back into your home.

✔️ Check for visible damage
Look for cracks in the masonry or rust on metal components. These small issues can quickly worsen once temperatures drop.

✔️   Clear your chimney cleanout
Ensure the cleanout located at the bottom of your chimney is free of ash and debris. A clear cleanout lets Co-Mate® work more effectively throughout the season.

✔️ Have your chimney professionally inspected (if needed)
If it’s been a year or more since your last inspection, or you suspect heavy build-up, book a certified chimney sweep to give it a thorough check. They may also have Co-Mate® on hand to help start your season off clean.

✔️Maintain your ash clean out
Regularly empty the ash dump or clean out below the firebox. Excess ash buildup in the firebox can impede air flow and reduce efficiency. This also makes stoking the fire more difficult. Over time, this can lead to excess moisture buildup as well, causing corrosion of metal surfaces inside your appliance.

✔️ Start using Co-Mate® early
Begin adding Co-Mate® to your fires at the start of the season to help break down any creosote that may have built up during previous burns. Consistency is key! Using it regularly from day one sets your system up for a cleaner, safer winter.

✔️ Burn dry, seasoned wood
Fresh or damp wood produces more smoke and creosote. Seasoned hardwood is always your best bet.

✔️ Keep airflow strong
Make sure your damper and air inlets aren’t obstructed. Strong airflow means hotter, cleaner burns.

✔️ Use Co-Mate® regularly
Add two to three tablespoons to a hot fire every few days. Co-Mate®’s natural mineral formula helps modify how creosote forms, making it less sticky and easier to remove, and helping prevent dangerous build-up before it starts. As seen in our recent case study, homeowners who used Co-Mate® steadily throughout the season noticed significantly less creosote build-up, cleaner fireboxes, and no smoke rollback when opening their furnace doors. The bottom line: Co-Mate® works best when it’s part of your ongoing routine. Not just an occasional add-in.

✔️ Watch for warning signs
More smoke than usual, reduced draft, or a smoky smell indoors could signal a blockage or excess creosote. If you notice these, stop using your appliance and investigate.

The Co-Mate® Difference

Traditional chimney sweeping can be messy, expensive, and easy to put off. Instead of relying solely on brushes or professional cleanings, Co-Mate® works while you burn, helping prevent creosote build-up before it becomes a problem. The natural, mineral-based formula is non-toxic and safe for all types of wood-burning appliances, from fireplaces to stoves and furnaces.

By enhancing combustion and altering how ash and creosote form, Co-Mate® helps reduce chimney fire risk, improves heat efficiency, and even leaves behind a light protective layer that guards against corrosion. The result? A cleaner, safer, more efficient system all season long… without the mess, stress, or added expense of regular traditional chimney sweeping. Just sprinkle it on, sit back, and enjoy the fire.

Keep your home safe this winter with Co-Mate®.
